BOWLING GREEN - The widow of a local World War II veteran accepted a high school diploma for her late husband from the Bowling Green school board last night.

William E. Lanning became the second World War II veteran to be awarded a diploma from Bowling Green since a new law took effect in October that allowed school districts to issue a diploma to any resident or deceased resident who was an honorably discharged World War II veteran and who left school to serve in the armed forces.

Last month, Charles Hess received his diploma during a brief ceremony at Bowling Green High School.

Mr. Lanning's wife, Jean, accepted the diploma from the school board for her late husband, who served as a bombardier gunner in the U.S. Navy.
