Recounts fail to alter races in Springfield Township, Maumee

12/18/2001

Recounts in two Lucas County elections reaffirmed earlier vote counts taken after the Nov. 6 election, county officials said yesterday.

The four-member board of elections certified the results of the races for seats on the Springfield Township board of trustees, the Maumee school board, and the Lucas County educational service center board in a meeting at Government Center.

Recounts were taken yesterday in the Maumee and Springfield Township races. The trailing candidate in the race for the county education service center, Karen Rogalski, notified elections officials that she did not wish a recount to be taken in her race. Trailing before the recount by 23 votes, she conceded defeat to Joe Rutherford.

In the race for a seat on the Springfield Township trustees, Robert Bethel retained a razor-thin vote margin over Andy Glenn, winning by four votes. Mr. Bethel's vote total of 1,573 did not change. Mr. Glenn gained one vote and ended with 1,569. Marylin Yoder, a former trustee, easily won the right to regain another seat on the three-member board.

A seat on the Maumee school board was narrowly won by Stephanie Piechowiak, who edged Thomas Leonard, the current school board president. Ms. Piechowiak takes the seat at the end of the year by winning 1,500 votes to Mr. Leonard's 1,493. The recount did not affect either candidate's total in the race.
