A Toledo man was hurt seriously yesterday when his pickup crashed into a guardrail on I-75, south at State Rt. 20, after Toledo police chased him when he failed to stop for officers who were looking for man who tried to rob a South Toledo restaurant.

David Furgeson, 43, of Euclid Avenue, was in critical condition last night in St. Luke's Hospital.

A man entered Johnny's Steak House, 1240 South Reynolds Rd., about 2 a.m., pushed a piece of paper toward a waitress at the front counter, and told her he had a “go” order. In the note, he demanded money, and then handed the waitress a bag. Instead of giving him money, the waitress closed the register drawer and walked away to call police. The man fled in a pickup, police said.

Officers spotted a truck matching the description of the one from the incident at Johnny's and tried to stop it on Western Avenue at the Anthony Wayne Trail about 10 minutes later. The driver didn't stop and police pursued the truck, which entered I-75 at South Avenue. The chase ended when the driver crashed.
