Apartments are planned in landmark B.G. hotel

BOWLING GREEN — Three years after buying the former Milliken Hotel, developer Robert Maurer is working on plans to convert the downtown landmark's second and third floors to apartments.

In a request filed with the city's planning department, Mr. Maurer asked for a variance that would allow him to put 30 one-bedroom apartments in the building at Main and Wooster streets. The units would be smaller than the 800 square feet required by the city code.

Mr. Maurer, who could not be reached yesterday, purchased the building for $351,000 from Bowling Green State University in December, 1998. The building's first floor is currently leased to shops and a restaurant.

The zoning board of appeals is to hear the request Jan. 9.
