Deputies will be trained to assist in emergency

PORT CLINTON - The state has provided the Ottawa County sheriff's office with a $10,000 grant to train corrections and communications officers to help with road patrol in case regular deputies are tied up with an emergency at FirstEnergy Corp.'s Davis-Besse nuclear power plant.

Eight deputies will receive the training on overtime. The office has been helping to guard the plant around the clock since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

The training will ease the manpower strain in case of an emergency in the area.

The Lake County sheriff's office east of Cleveland has been awarded a similar grant.
