A new career may await those who upgrade their skills

The region is sprinkled with professional and trade schools offering their services to those who may want to try their hands at a new career or who are looking for vocational training to prepare them for the workforce.

These institutions provide an opportunity for students to receive certificates, licenses, and degrees in fields ranging from health care to computer programming to automotive and industrial technology.

Stautzenberger College, founded in 1926, is an accredited business school that specializes in information technology, medical technology, and veterinary technology.

In November, the college welcomed a new president, George Simon, who came with 30 years of experience in higher education.

The college has plans to expand this year, physically and programmatically, said Daryl Stack, the college's director of operations.

“We have some things on the drawing board that are exciting,” he said.

The Toledo school's enrollment continues to grow, up from 500 last year to about 575 now. It has more than 250 computers and has trained more than 900 students to build computers through its programs, he said.

The college offers associate degrees in executive office administration, network system administration, veterinary technician, business computer specialist, medical assisting, and medical office administrator. Classes in real estate prelicensing and medical transcribing are offered as well.

Apollo Career Center Adult Workforce Education in Lima has a variety of training programs, including new offerings in surgical technology, light commercial residential construction, and medical assistant training.

The center has 150 full-time students and serves about 7,500 part-time students.

Apollo offers programs in practical nurse training, building maintenance, industrial maintenance/machine repair, nurse's aides, child care, home health aides, machine tool blueprint reading and drawing, boiler operation, computer, and office skills.

Additionally, it has diversified industry programs, including air-conditioning and refrigeration, machining, electricity, welding, hydraulics, boiler operation, print reading, math, computer-assisted design, and supervisor training, and law enforcement.

In Findlay, AEC Southern Ohio College has about 270 students at its 17,000-square-foot facility.

The private school offers associate degrees in medical assisting, medical office administration, accounting, business management and micro-computer management. The college has a one-year diploma program in practical nursing.

Penta Career Center Adult and Continuing Education has provided training for adults in the community for more than 30 years.

Some of the full-time adult education training programs include: automotive technologies, building and property maintenance, computer technology, and medical and business office technologies.

A number of part-time classes are available in such areas as computers, medical terminology, and phlebotomy.

The program has about 70 full-time students and about 1,400 part-time students.

Area businesses can receive training through Penta Adult Education in human resource development, supervisory training, and small business management, ISO certification, and public safety training.

Classes in Toledo Public School's Adult and Continuing Education program range from preparing for the General Equivalency Diploma to certificates in practical nurse training.

Occupational training programs include aviation, health technologies, business technology, family and consumer science, and trade and industrial technology.
