Area clinics offer medical services

A variety of medical facilities in the area offer free or low-cost services. Primary care, dental care, mental health care, and other services are available at many of these sites.

Those providing the care recommend calling first to set up an appointment or to verify if you qualify for treatment. Many of the sites take Medicaid, but some offer care free of charge or on a sliding fee scale.

OHIO

Mildred Bayer Clinic for the Homeless: Certification: federal Bureau of Primary Health Care. 2101 Jefferson Ave., Toledo, 419-241-1554. Free medical and dental care for the homeless.

Comprehensive Addiction Service Systems (COMPASS): Certification: licensed by the Ohio Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction Services. 2465 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, 419-241-8827. Provides drug and alcohol counseling services. Initial $68 assessment fee followed by $10 weekly fee after acceptance into the program.

Cordelia Martin Health Center: Certification: federal Bureau of Primary Health Care. 905 Nebraska Ave., Toledo, 419-255-7883. Free and low-cost medical and dental care.

Behavioral Connections of Wood County, Inc.: Certification: licensed by the Ohio Department of Mental Health. Operates out of five facilities in Bowling Green and two in Perrysburg. Call 419-352-5387 in Bowling Green and 419-872-2419 in Perrysburg. Provides comprehensive mental health and substance abuse care. -Accepts Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay (sliding fee).

Dental Center of Northwest Ohio: Certification: an agency of the United Way of Greater Toledo. 2138 Madison Ave., Toledo, 419-241-6215. Low-cost dental care for children and adults. Medicaid accepted.

Fulton County Health Department: Certification: accredited by the Ohio Department of Health. 606 South Shoop Ave., Wauseon, 419-337-0915. Limited low-cost medical care for pediatric, adult, and prenatal patients, including immunizations.

Harbor Behavioral Health Care: Certification: accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. 4334 Secor Rd., Toledo, 419-475-4449. Seven other local sites can be contacted through that number. Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay, and most private insurance accepted, as well as some charity care available. Comprehensive mental health services for children, adults, families, and businesses.

Substance Abuse Services, Inc. Provides drug and alcohol counseling and prevention classes for adults and children. Sliding fee and Medicaid.

Toledo-Lucas County Health Department: Certification: audited by Ohio Department of Health. 635 North Erie St., Toledo, 419-213-4100. Free and low cost medical care for pediatric, adult and prenatal patients. Free and low cost dental care for children.

Unison Behavioral Health Group: Certification: the Ohio Department of Mental Health; Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; Alcohol, Drug and Addiction Services. Provides help for those with serious mental illness and those with mental illness and drug addiction. Fees are adjusted based on ability to pay.

Provides comprehensive mental health care.

First Call for Help: This service offers information about and referrals to health-care and human-service agencies. In Lucas County, it is a program of the Greater Toledo Chapter of the American Red Cross, 419-246-4636. In Ottawa County, it is a program of the United Way, 419-734-6645 or 800-650-HELP. Based in Napoleon for Defiance, Fulton, Henry and Williams counties, it is affiliated with the United Way, 419-599-1660 or 800-468-4357. In Wood County, there is no First Call for Help, but The Link (Crisis Intervention Center) provides a similar service; 419-352-1545 or 800-472-9411.

MICHIGAN

Monroe County

Comprehensive services for mentally ill, mentally disabled, and emotionally impaired children and adults on a sliding fee scale and Medicaid.

No physician on staff, but provides maternal services support, childhood immunizations, family planning services, and a dental program for Medicaid-eligible children.

Lenawee County

Lenawee County Health Department: Certification: Michigan Department of Community Health. 1040 South Winter St., Adrian, 517-264-5226. Provides family planning, adult and child immunizations, maternal and infant support services, and a variety of other medical screening programs on sliding fee scale.
