Fostoria council reduces funding for 2 city groups

3/21/2002

FOSTORIA - City Council approved two ordinances Tuesday night that will continue city funding for local community organizations but at half the amount.

The Fostoria Economic Development Corp. and Fostoria Community Framework for Progress will receive $20,000 each this year. For the last four years, both organizations received $40,000 annually.

Funding for the organizations comes from the half percent city income tax labeled Invest in Fostoria, which was passed in 1997 and expires at the end of this year.

Mayor John Davoli said he hoped the $40,000 savings would go toward bringing back a police officer who recently was laid off because of budget constraints. But an auditor's report showed that the police department is $60,000 over budget for the first few months of the year.

Safety-Service Director Ralph Wise said it appears the additional money will need to go toward balancing the budget.
