Maumee plans $22.5M in new buildings, improvements

3/20/2002

Maumee would build several municipal buildings and improve others at a cost of $22.5 million in long-term debt if recommendations by the council's building and lands committee are carried through to fruition.

Council member Brent Buehrer, the committee chairman, announced the recommendations at Monday's council meeting. They are:

  • Replacement of Fire Station No. 1 at its current location on East William Street. Officials believe the station is inadequate for the city's firefighting and emergency medical services needs. The station would be 24,000 square feet. The cost: $4 million.

  • Replacement of the police station at its current site with a 40,000-square-foot facility. The current building is crowded and out-of-date. The cost: $8.5 million.

  • Renovation of the Maumee Indoor Theater. Maumee has hired a consultant to come up with a business plan for the city-owned theater. The cost: $4 million.

  • Construction of an 8,400-square-foot addition to the Maumee Senior Center. The addition would include a large group room with a basement and an elevator and an office area. The cost: $1.2 million.

  • A 15,000-square foot service storage facility on city-owned property on Illinois Avenue. The cost: $600,000.

  • Reconstruction of John, Wayne, and William streets uptown. The cost: $3 million.

  • Upgrade the sanitary lift stations at Seventh Avenue and Key Street and the pumping station on Michigan Avenue. The cost: $1.2 million.

The report noted that an indoor municipal swimming pool and a training center for firefighters and police officers would cost $2.5 million each. But it did not include them because sites have not been found.

City council forwarded the report to its finance committee, which will come up with a recommendation on how to pay for the projects. Because of low interest rates, Mr. Buehrer noted that the city could borrow money inexpensively right now.
