Washington Twp. studies waste removal options
4/18/2002Washington Township trustees are trying to determine if naming a preferred provider for waste removal might save businesses and residents money.
Trustee Camille Hammer cautioned that it will likely be a lengthy process before a decision is made.
“There are a lot of things to consider. Some people have unlimited pickup and in some cases two homeowners with little refuse will combine and split the bill for one pickup.
“Some people may spend four months of the year in Florida so they pay nothing [during that time],” she said.
Township clerk Becky Bodette said savings is one reason the township is looking into the possibility. Another reason: making refuse collection more manageable. Under the system now, in which everyone has a private contract, “there are haulers in the township almost everyday and there is trash out in front of houses almost every day.”
Ms. Hammer said she has been asked if the a better refuse collection system could be established. She said she is aware of “at least four carriers at different times of the week. It can also take a toll on our roads.”
About a year ago Sylvania Township trustees held two public meetings to determine if there was interest in a preferred-provider system.
Jim Maxwell, Sylvania Township administrator, said most residents said they were satisfied with private collectors as well as the township's program for general pickup and special collections after storms.
“It just wasn't a program that people were interested in,” Mr. Maxwell said.
Nevertheless, Ms. Hammer said after Washington Township trustees have looked into the possibility, public hearings will be slated.
More savings would probably be realized if more people opted for a preferred-provider program, she said, but it will be up to the individual to decide if they want to take part or keep their hauler.
