Attention: Toledoblade.com users

4/26/2002

Yesterday morning, many visitors to www.toledoblade.com were unable to access the site.

The problems have largely been addressed but more technical double-checking is under way to stabilize access and ensure the site's availability. No future problems are anticipated.

The problems lasted about four hours Thursday and affected not only access to the site, but e-mail availability and web surfing for thousands of customers of Buckeye Express and Access Toledo, two local providers of Internet service and connectivity.

The outages resulted from two overlapping events: a piece of local computer hardware that helps direct Web traffic failed; and two fiber-optic lines owned by two national network traffic carriers were inadvertently cut, dozens of miles from the Toledo area. These lines are not maintained by Buckeye Express and are not part of its local service network, but are used to transport its web traffic nationally.
