Delta man's body believed to have been found in creek

DELTA, Ohio - A body matching the description of a man missing since April 4 was found last night in Bad Creek, about 600 feet east of where the man's vehicle went into the creek, Fulton County sheriff's deputies said.

The body, which was partially submerged, was found about 6:45 p.m. by a local resident, who dialed 911, authorities said.

John Carney, 22, of Delta, had not been seen since after 11 p.m. April 4. His empty vehicle was found the next morning partially submerged in 5 feet of water in Bad Creek, a tributary of the Maumee River along Fulton County Road D.

Authorities have surmised that Mr. Carney was eastbound on Road D, west of County Road 6, when his car veered off the road. They believe he was hurt when his head crashed into the car's windshield.

Investigators have conducted searches of the area based on the assumption that he got out of the vehicle and began to walk away. Blood was found on a creek bank near the vehicle.

Divers recently found a human toe near where his vehicle was found. The toe, believed to be a big toe, was turned over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for testing.

Dr. Harry Murtiff, county coroner, said earlier this week that tests to determine the source of the toe could take anywhere from three weeks to three months to complete.
