Road Warrior: Area construction update

Paving has begun on I-280, which is being widened between Manhattan Boulevard and the Buckeye Basin Greenbelt Parkway in conjunction with the new Maumee River bridge.

The Blade's Road Warrior tells readers where the biggest driving headaches will be throughout the construction season. He'll tell you which spots to avoid and what detours to take.

Road Warrior reader Steve Woods called to complain about the rough condition of the Manhattan Boulevard railroad crossing near Wallace Street. Heavy trucks have pummeled the pavement and asphalt patches in the potholes do not last very long, Mr. Woods said. He inquired as to what can be done to get permanent repairs made.

The Road Warrior has observed that the Detroit Avenue crossing of the same CSX railroad line is in similar condition and included that one when he inquired to the city about crossing maintenance.

Kent Gardam, manager of transportation engineering at the city division of engineering service, said that it is up to the railroad to maintain the pavement within the crossings but that if the railroad does not respond to a city complaint, the city can do the work and then bill for it.

He did not know if the city has requested action from CSX concerning Manhattan and Detroit.

1. I-280: Widening associated with the new Maumee River bridge requires a 45-mph speed limit between Manhattan Boulevard and Greenbelt Parkway and between Ravine Parkway and Navarre Avenue. The Starr Avenue ramps are closed, and occasional nighttime lane closings occur.

2. I-280: Bridge painting restricts traffic to a single lane northbound at the Hanley-Latcha interchange and to a single lane in both directions at the Lemoyne Road overpass.

3. I-75/Buck Road/Third Street (Rossford): Preliminary work on interchange reconstruction is under way. Third Street is closed at the Glenwood-Buck intersection just east of I-75 through Friday. On Monday, the Buck Road bridge over the freeway will close for five months. Occasional I-75 lane closings occur.

4. Ohio Turnpike: Shoulder work and other preparations for turnpike widening will require single lane zones near the I-280 interchange in Wood County through next month. All lanes will be open from noon until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays.

5. U.S. 20/23: Median construction and resurfacing requires varying lane closings between Indiana Avenue and Thompson Road in Perrysburg Township. Traffic may be delayed.

6 State Rts. 105, 199: Resurfacing requires daily flag zones on Route 199 between Perrysburg and Route 105 and on Route 105 between Route 199 and I-75.

7. State Rt. 246 (Dorr Street): Reconstruction reduces the street to one lane each way between Douglas and Secor roads. Pavement reconstruction after waterline construction requires lane restrictions between Byrne and Richards roads.

8. State Rt. 795: Bridge reconstruction restricts traffic to one lane each way at the Ohio Turnpike.

9. State Rt. 51 (Monroe Street): Pavement, sidewalk, and waterline work restricts traffic to one lane each way between 17th Street and Collingwood Boulevard.

10. Lafayette, Huron streets: Crosswalk construction that has closed the streets at their intersection should be finished today.

11. Sylvania Avenue: Widening and reconstruction restrict traffic to one lane in each direction between Monroe Street and Crary Drive (east of Secor Road). On Monday only, Sylvania will be closed immediately east of Secor for storm drain installation.

12. Summit Street/I-280: Sewer repairs close southbound Summit Street at I-280, effectively closing the ramp from southbound Summit to southbound I-280. Ramp traffic is detoured via Galena Street to the Greenbelt Parkway entrance. Other traffic is detoured to Huron Street. Work is scheduled to continue through May 10.

I-75: Crack sealing requires varying daytime lane closings in Lima, Ohio.

Ohio Turnpike: Resurfacing projects restrict traffic to one lane each way on the westernmost 5.7 miles in Williams County and to two lanes each way for nine miles east of the Fremont interchange. Single-lane traffic may occur during off-peak hours in the Fremont work area.

U.S. 6: The road has reopened following emergency work to stabilize a decayed culvert between Fremont and Sandusky.

U.S. 6/24: Bridge work west of Napoleon restricts U.S. 24 to one lane each way and closes the ramp from eastbound U.S. 6 to westbound U.S. 24 through May.

U.S. 23: Pavement and shoulder repairs require intermittent single-lane traffic between Ida Center Road and M-50 in Dundee through late July. All lanes are open by 3 p.m. on Fridays. Construction of crossovers for a major project next year causes occasional lane closings near Summerfield Road, also in Monroe County. South of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, work on a new U.S. 30 freeway requires occasional lane closings on U.S. 23.
