Flat Rock track coach killed walking on I-75

MONROE - A 33-year-old Monroe man was killed early yesterday morning when he was struck by a car while walking in the southbound lanes of I-75 near LaPlaisance Road, Monroe County Sheriff's deputies said.

Emmons Richard Duvall, Jr., a teacher at Simpson Middle School in Flat Rock and the high school's varsity girls track coach, walked into the path of a southbound car driven by Wendy Cagle, 33, of Monroe, deputies said.

Ms. Cagle was treated at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe. Mr. Duvall was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The 3:05 a.m. incident closed the southbound lanes of the interstate for approximately three hours.
