Sylvania Twp. aide wants hearing on dismissal

A fired-then-rehired Sylvania Township employee wants a public hearing on her dismissal, her attorney told township trustees last night.

Shelly Bubacz, administrative assistant to township Administrator Jim Maxwell, was fired Thursday and then reinstated the next day. She met with Mr. Maxwell yesterday morning but said the reasons behind her firing were not detailed.

“The only reason we've been given is that she's an at-will employee,” her attorney, Thomas Overley, said.

Mr. Overley told trustees at the emergency meeting called for personnel issues last night that Ms. Bubacz is entitled to the hearing. The trustees met behind closed doors for one hour and emerged with no action taken.

Mr. Overley said the trustees asked him to submit his request for a public hearing in writing.

Ms. Bubacz, who is paid $16.77 an hour, is now on administrative leave with pay, she said. She has worked for the township 10 years.

Mr. Maxwell said the trustees made the decision to dismiss Ms. Bubacz in deliberations that did not include him.

“We're taking certain questions under legal advice,” Trustee Dennis Boyle said. Trustee Dick Moses declined comment. Trustee Chairman Jim Schwerkoske was not available for comment.
