Waterville voters to decide on renewal of income tax

6/12/2002

Voters in Waterville will decide in November whether to renew the village's additional 0.5 per cent income tax.

Village council agreed earlier this week to place the tax issue on the ballot this fall. If approved by voters, the community's income tax rate would remain at the current level - a total of 2 per cent - through December, 2007.

Waterville has a permanent 1.5 per cent income tax and an additional 0.5 per cent tax that is voted on every five years. The total income tax collection for 2002 is estimated at nearly $2 million. The money is used for general village operations and capital improvements, Kirk Kern, assistant municipal administrator, said yesterday.

The 0.5 per cent tax was first ap|proved by voters in 1982, and has been renewed every five years since then. It will expire at the end of this year unless voters agree to continue it.
