State suspends license of doctor for alcohol abuse

7/10/2002

The medical license of a Toledo anesthesiologist has been suspended indefinitely because she began abusing alcohol again.

The State Medical Board had placed Dr. Ann Govier, 49, on probation for four years, effective Jan. 17, because she had a history of alcohol dependency. One of the terms of her probation was to not use alcohol. She admitted to the board that she began drinking alcohol again in April, and her abuse became bad enough that she sought help at a treatment center, where she remains.

In other action, the board set an Aug. 5 hearing during which it will decide what action to take against a Maumee physician who is serving three months in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, Stryker. Dr. Mohammad Adas, 50, pleaded no contest to seven felony counts of complicity in the commission of practicing medicine or surgery without a certificate. Prosecutors said Adas improperly allowed his employees to conduct medical procedures on his behalf.

The board had suspended Adas' license in January because of an unrelated case involving alcohol dependence. The board will now consider whether to take further action against Adas, including the possible revocation of his license.
