A kidnapping was thwarted Saturday in Maumee when a 17-year-old youth confronted a man who had taken his 3-year-old brother from their yard where he was playing.

Maumee police said the suspect took the boy from the rear yard of a home in the 2600 block of Seventh Street about 6:30 p.m. and walked about two miles into Toledo. Maumee police and the teen searched for the boy after his mother discovered he was missing. The teen found him being carried by a man on Devonshire Road.

The elder brother confronted the man, who dropped the boy and ran. Police are looking for the suspect, a white man with brown hair, a “gray scruffy beard” who appeared to be in his 40s, said Maumee police Sgt. David Tullis. The suspect weighs about 180 pounds and is between 5 feet, 10 inches and 6 feet tall, police said. He was wearing an orange T-shirt, dark jeans, and wire-rimmed sunglasses.
