2 picnics to honor Ohio's migrant farmworkers

8/3/2002

From 2 to 6 p.m., migrant workers and other visitors will enjoy Tejano music and eat American and Mexican picnic foods. Games and other activities for children are planned. Last year's event in the park drew about 400 people, and organizers hope for a similar turnout today, said Humberto Gonzales, manager of Rural Opportunities' Fremont office. A similar observance is planned today at the Migrant Rest Center in Liberty Center, Ohio.

Farmworker Recognition Day, proclaimed in 1987, is marked each year on the first Saturday in August. “It's a way to recognize the contribution of the farmworkers,” Mr. Gonzales said.
