Bees sting about 30 people at Ottawa Park gathering

9/1/2002

About 30 people were stung by swarming bees during what was billed as a community picnic and “Back to School” get-together yesterday at Ottawa Park sponsored by WJUC-FM and attended by hundreds of people.

And police had to be sent to the area when fights broke out after the event had ended.

At least two juveniles were arrested, police said.

About 1 p.m., the bees stung about 30 people in the area of the amphitheater. They were treated at a first-aid station set up at the park.

The area where the bees were located was roped off and park maintenance personnel sprayed the bees in an attempt to kill them. City officials plan to have an exterminator at the park Tuesday to eradicate the bees.

The event featured music, other entertainment, a talent show, and free hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks.
