Local reserves ready for new commander

12/7/2002

Navy Lt. Vic Sanders assumes command today of the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, 28828 Glenwood Rd., Perrysburg Township, from Lt. Cmdr. Steve Hartsel.

A change-of-command ceremony at the reserve center will be overseen by Rear Adm. H. Kirk Unruh, commander of 7,200 naval reservists assigned to 26 Navy reserve centers in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Lieutenant Sanders, a former Army paratrooper, has worked with naval law enforcement, Commander Hartsel said. The lieutenant will oversee an eight-person full-time staff and 165 drilling naval reservists.

Commander Hartsel, a graduate of the former DeVilbiss High School and the University of Toledo, has orders to report as chief staff officer for Maritime Prepositioning Squadron One in the Mediterranean. The squadron maintains vessels that are kept loaded with combat equipment, ready for deployment in the European Theater, he said.
