The Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trust, a charitable fund administered by Fifth Third Bank, has fulfilled its pledge to the Little Sisters of the Poor with a $50,000 check.

The bank, on behalf of the 83-year-old trust, made the second installment of a two-year, $100,000 pledge to the religious community, which is building an $18 million facility to replace Sacred Heart Home for the Aged on Navarre Avenue in Oregon. The new facility will continue the Little Sisters' mission of housing the elderly poor of all denominations. Each of the 70 residents will have a private room and bath when the home opens in the spring, and 50 more people will be brought in for a day-care program, Mother Judith Meredith, Little Sisters of the Poor administrator, said.

The fate of Sacred Heart Home has not been decided, Mother Judith said.

Jacob Schmidlapp founded Union Savings Bank and Trust Co., which became Fifth Third Bank, and established the trust to make charitable contributions after his death.
