Smallpox vaccinations set to begin

2/15/2003

Authorities at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department yesterday received their shipment of smallpox vaccine and intend to begin vaccinating some public health workers on Tuesday.

The health department is the coordinating agency for an 18-county region in northwest Ohio.

After select public health care workers in Lucas County are vaccinated, their counterparts will be vaccinated elsewhere. Seven to 10 days later, vaccinated public health workers will vaccinate up to 1,000 hospital workers in the region.

Other regions of the state also intend to begin smallpox vaccinations on Tuesday. Michigan authorities will start on Friday.
