Troopers nab 3 suspects in turnpike robbery try

5/16/2003

Montrell Gilbert, 22, was charged with receiving stolen property, attempted armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying weapons under disability, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The two teens, both 17, were charged with delinquency in connection with attempted armed robbery, troopers at the patrol's Swanton post said.

Two suspects confronted a 57-year-old man from Holland, Mich., in the restroom at the Wyandot Service Plaza. One of the suspects was carrying a large semiautomatic weapon, troopers said.

The men demanded money, then fled when the victim told them he had none. The Michigan man followed the men outside and saw them drive off in a 2003 Pontiac Vibe. Troopers located the car heading east on the turnpike, followed it into the Commodore Perry Service Plaza, and arrested Mr. Gilbert and the two teens, troopers said.
