Point Place kicks off 3 weeks of fun

Point Place Days are back. The annual three-week community celebration begins tomorrow with a bicycle decorating contest, dress-your-pet contest, auto show, ice cream social, and parade.

Events continue through June 28 and include a pie and cake-baking contest, a canoe race, and fireworks.

The celebration starts officially at noon tomorrow when the 13th annual Point Place Parade starts at 108th and North Summit streets.

At 10 a.m., onlookers can view the bicycle-decorating contest and dress-your-pet contest at 109th and North Summit streets.

In addition, from noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow, an ice cream social will take place at United Methodist Church, 2862 131st St. From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Placers Auto Show is scheduled at Friendship Park Senior Center, 2930 131st St.

The parade route will head north on North Summit to 131st Street, and turn right to end at the Harbor Light Masonic Temple. Some 1,250 people will take part in the parade, said Howard Pinkley,a past president and current historian of the Point Place Business Association, which presents Point Place Days.

Other activities include:

  • June 17: A pie and cake-baking contest takes place. Judging by area chefs is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Friendship Park Senior Center. Pies and cakes will be sold after the judging for $1 a slice. Information: Vee Stader at 419-729-3044.

  • June 18: A Hot Air Balloon “Glo,” a bonfire-like event during which the inside of a hot-air balloon is illuminated, begins 8:30 p.m. at the Friendship Park Senior Center.

  • June 19: A chicken and ribs barbecue takes place at 4 p.m. followed by a canoe race at 6 p.m. at Cullen Park, 101st and North Summit streets.

  • June 21: A flag-raising ceremony is scheduled at 11 a.m. at the Point Place VFW, 5416 North Summit St.

  • June 25: A new event this year is a garden tour from 6 to 9 p.m., with rides on the TARTA Trolley to view seven of the area's gardens. Tourgoers are to meet at 5 p.m. at Jake & T's, 4532 North Summit St.

  • June 27: Summerfest 2003, a community celebration organized by the Washington Township Firefighters, takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight at Shoreland Park.

  • June 28: A fireworks display, begins at dusk near the bridge, at Shoreland Avenue and North Summit Street.
