Hancock County to pay for cash register change

7/2/2003

FINDLAY — Hancock County's increased sales tax should generate enough money to help the sheriff's office operate, but it comes with a price tag.

County Auditor Tony Iriti said yesterday that the county will have to pay the cost of adjusting merchants' cash registers to reflect the 0.25 percent increase. County voters approved the two-year tax hike in May to prevent layoffs at the sheriff's office and a possible closure of a wing at the county jail.

While Mr. Iriti said he does not know what the total bill will be, it will cost up to $100 to make the change at each store with a single cash register. The tax increase is expected to raise about $2.5 million a year.
