Seneca County weighs 4-year sales tax increase

7/11/2003

The meeting, scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at the county Job and Family Services building, will begin with a public hearing on the proposed tax. The commissioners also plan to conduct a hearing on the tax at 1 p.m. today at the same site.

The commissioners imposed an emergency 0.5-percent sales tax last month to close a $1.7 million deficit this year and avoid dozens of layoffs in the sheriff's office and other county departments. Collection of the emergency tax will begin Aug. 1 and expire Dec. 31. The proposed four-year tax would take effect Jan. 1.
