7/17/2003

A Monroe man suffered a possible broken leg, arm, and other injuries yesterday when his 20-foot pleasure craft crashed into the CSX railroad bridge while boating down the Maumee River.

His name was not available. However, he was listed in serious condition last night in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Another man who was piloting the vessel was charged with operating a boat under the influence of alcohol, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The man's name also was not available.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said the two men, both 50, had been watching the Parade of Sails that was part of the Huntington Tall Ships Toledo festival. About 3:30 p.m., the boat hit the wake of another boat and was pushed into one of the bridge abutments.

The Coast Guard took the injured man to their Toledo station and transported him to St. Vincent.
