Crashes tie up roads in Maumee, Toledo

7/19/2003

An exit ramp from eastbound U.S. 24 to northbound U.S. 23 in Maumee was closed for seven hours yesterday after a tractor trailer overturned, blocking traffic, police said.

Kharia Singh, 28, of Ontario, Canada, the driver of the semi, who was not hurt seriously, was charged with failure to maintain reasonable control of the vehicle.

Mr. Singh was driving on the curved ramp about 11:30 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The trailer was heavily loaded with metal parts, which hampered the cleanup effort. The ramp opened for traffic about 6:30 p.m., police said.

And a semi jackknifed yesterday just north of where a 14-vehicle pileup occurred Wednesday on northbound I-75 near South Avenue, Toledo police said.

The truck driven by Ravi Dhaliwal of Cambridge, Ont., went out of control on the wet pavement about 1:30 a.m. and hit the concrete wall on the left side of interstate at the downtown exit. Mr. Dhaliwal was cited for failure to control. Traffic was reduced to one lane in order to clean up a diesel fuel spill from the crash, police said.
