Woman wins Michigan self-sufficiency award

8/5/2003

HILLSDALE — A local woman recently received the Michigan Family Independence Agency's statewide Achiever of the Month award, making her the 116th resident statewide to be given the honor.

Brandi McAulay, a single mother of two children and a former public assistance recipient, was recognized for making outstanding progress toward self-sufficiency under Michigan's comprehensive welfare reform initiative, To Strengthen Michigan Families.

Ms. McAulay applied for assistance from the agency in October, 2002. At the time she was homeless and unemployed and had no transportation or telephone. With assistance from the agency and other community-based groups, Ms. McAuley found shelter, transportation, and a job. Her case was closed due to earnings in April, 2003.
