Area arts grants exceed $700K

Arts organizations and programs in northwest Ohio will receive more than $700,000 in grants from the Ohio Arts Council next year for projects ranging from the publication of literary magazines to bringing artists into schools.

The 47 grants going to area groups for the 2004 fiscal year are among 433 totaling $8.2 million and include funds for operating support of institutions like the Toledo Museum of Art, which was awarded the region's largest grant, $229,408.

Jami Goldstein of the arts council said that operating support the grants provide is especially important to small and midsized organizations.

Recipients are required to match the state money with additional public and private funds.

Other Toledo groups and projects receiving operational support in the latest round of grant awards include Toledo Symphony, $100,343; Toledo Opera, $31,408; Toledo Jazz Society, $18,107; Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, $14,476; Arts Council Lake Erie West, $11,019; Toledo Botanical Garden, $9,906; Toledo Ballet, $7,322, and Masterworks Chorale, $6,165.

The arts commission also was given a $23,975 grant for its Young Artists at Work program.

In addition, Toledo Cultural Arts Center received $17,552 for its fifth season, Toledo Friends of Photography was given $3,332 for a national juried photo exhibition, American Indian Intertribal Association got $1,896 for its Toledo Pow Wow, and Lucas County Educational Service Center was awarded $1,200 for a two-week music residency.

Other grant recipients are listed below by city:

Ada: Ohio Northern University Freed Center for Performing Arts, $16,950.

Bowling Green: Black Swamp Arts Festival, $8,380; Bowling Green State University Arts Unlimited, $4,158; BGSU English Department, $2,379 for the Mid-American Review literary publication; BGSU, $2,135 for the Black Swamp Old-Time Music Festival, and the BGSU School of Art Gallery, $15,759 for exhibitions and programs including the New Music and Arts Festival.

Findlay: Arts Partnership of Greater Hancock County, five grants totaling $67,729 for operating support, smARTWORKS after-school program, education partnership and plan, and fee support.

Fostoria: St. Wendelin High School, $1,800 for visual arts residency.

Fremont: Hayes Presidential Center, $100 for community programs.

Holgate: Holgate Local Schools, $900 for music residency.

Huron: Larry Smith, director of Firelands College Writing Center, two grants totaling $4,504 for publications including four books and Heartlands: a Magazine of Midwest Living and Writing, and for a monthly coffeehouse reading series.

Lima: Allen County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, $1,800 for dance residency; Artspace/Lima, $16,189 for operating support; Council for Arts of Greater Lima, two grants totaling $29,478 for Allen County Arts Education Collaborative and operating support; Lima Symphony, $13,304 in operating support, and St. Rose School, $1,800 for traditional arts residency.

Napoleon: Henry County Arts Council, two grants totaling $21,567 for Connecting Our Cultures program and operating support.

Oregon: Eastern Maumee Bay Arts Council, two grants totaling $1,639 for Tomato Harvest Music Review and Winter GALLERIE, and Oregon City Schools, $14,350 for Arts Integration Project.

Pemberville: Brickstreet Community Arts Council, $1,102 for operating support.

Sandusky: Firelands Symphony, $8,149 for operating support; Sandusky Concert Association, $7,056 for operating support, and St. Mary Central Catholic High School, $1,350 for visual arts residency

Sylvania: Lourdes College, $12,728 for 19th season.

Van Wert: Wassenberg Art Center, $6,342 for operating support.
