Car-part heirs donate land to ProMedica

A daughter and son-in-law of automotive parts pioneer John Goerlich have donated an Ottawa Hills residential lot appraised at $100,000 to ProMedica Health System's Goerlich Center for Alzheimer's Care on the Flower Hospital campus in Sylvania.

The gift was from Smiley Putman, daughter of the AP Parts founder, and her husband, Paul, a former chairman of the corporation. ProMedica intends to sell the vacant parcel in The Stables at Hasty Farm development, said Jenny Goldberg, ProMedica media relations manager.

The assessed value of the property in 2000 was $95,200, the Lucas County Auditor's Office said. But a recent appraisal placed the value at $100,000, Ms. Goldberg said.

The Goerlich Center opened in September, 1994, and has offered residential care for people with Alzheimer's disease and support and education for families and caregivers.

Mr. Goerlich's daughters, Mrs. Putman and Sandy Alexander, have supported the center through donations, Ms. Goldberg said.

Mr. Goerlich and his wife, Selma, died in 1991.
