Ohio EPA to supervise Defiance County landfills

8/22/2003

DEFIANCE — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to assume oversight of waste landfills in Defiance County after the county's general health district said it no longer could handle the function because of a lack of money and increased demands on its staff.

The EPA or local health districts monitor waste shipments hauled to landfills to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations, the agency said.

The transfer means the EPA office in Bowling Green will be responsible for the oversight and will receive license fees that had gone to the county.

Defiance has a solid-waste and an industrial landfill and 11 composting facilities. EPA oversight will include 12 medical waste producers.
