Delta pursues study of joint fire district

9/4/2003

DELTA - Village Council agreed this week to hire a research consultant to study the possibility of a joint fire district with Swanton and six townships.

Council plans to send letters to Swanton and the townships of Swanton, Harding, York, Fulton, Swancreek, and Pike to ask them to help pay for the $7,900 study by Robert Leohnard.

Gary Baker, village administrator, said the village's plan is to pay 30 percent of the cost, have Swanton pay 30 percent, and divide the remainder among the townships that want to participate. These jurisdictions will have 30 days to respond to the offer.

Currently, York Township and Swanton village each have a fire department, with each protecting several townships; York Township also provides coverage to Delta.

If the other jurisdictions agree to the feasibility study within a month, it could begin as early as October, Mr. Baker said.
