Hillsdale panel advises against city income tax

9/4/2003

HILLSDALE — A seven-member committee organized to study a proposed city income tax recommended Tuesday the Hillsdale City Council not pursue the issue.

Instead, the members of the committee asked city officials to consider different ways of funding roads and infrastructure. City officials are looking to help fund about $55 million in maintenance and repairs needed for the city's curbs, gutters, storm drains, and street surfaces, of which about $15 million worth of repairs are listed as critical.

The committee added that if the city were unable to successfully find alternative funding sources, an income tax should not go before voters until 2004.
