Donors could rescue Swanton extracurriculars

SWANTON - Sports and other extracurricular activities may be offered in Swanton this winter, despite last week s operating levy failure.

A group led by alumnus Bill Pilliod appears to have gathered enough donations to make a viable pitch to the school board tonight, school Superintendent Kevin McQuade said.

The board is to meet at 7:30 p.m. in the high school. But even if Mr. Pilliod offers a way to pay bills of at least $100,000 for extracurricular activities privately, dissent is likely.

Last week some residents and employees read to the school board from a levy campaign brochure that said extracurricular activities would be cut if the levy failed. Then they told the board it must stick to what it said it would do to gain the community s trust. Others reiterated that the school s mission is academics and it should put its funds toward such goals first.
