Detroit Metro raises parking rates

11/18/2003

Holiday travelers flying from Detroit Metropolitan-Wayne County Airport will notice a slight increase in long-term parking rates at the McNamara Terminal.

The airport has raised the daily rate $1 to $11 - an increase expected to generate more than $2.5 million a year, said Mike Conway, a Metro Airport spokesman.

The increase at the McNamara Terminal, which houses Northwest Airlines busiest hub, took effect last month. The last time parking rates at the airport had risen was in May, 2000, when the daily rate at the Blue Deck next to the Smith Terminal increased from $10 to $12. The rate was later dropped to $5 because of demand for parking at the McNamara Terminal, Mr. Conway said.

McNamara parking was $13 a day when the terminal opened in 2002, but was reduced six months later to $10.

Long-term parking at the Blue Deck and the Yellow Deck adjacent to the Berry Terminal is $5 a day. Mr. Conway said the McNamara parking costs more because the terminal offers more conveniences and is in higher demand.
