Mayor of Litchfield recalled by 150-65 vote

1/7/2004

LITCHFIELD, Mich. — The mayor of this Hillsdale County city was recalled yesterday.

Mayor Harvey Keast was recalled with 150 people voting in favor of the recall and 65 opposed. Mr. Keast could not be reached for comment.

The recall results must be certified before they become official.

Litchfield resident Ronald Flint had turned in 141 signatures last year on 12 petitions asking for the recall of the Mr. Keast. The petition language accused Mr. Keast of abusive behavior.

In October, Litchfield Clerk Roger Sprague verified the signatures and declared that 116 were valid.

The petition read, in part: “Harvey Keast has publicly accused the City of Litchfield of embezzling taxpayer's money without any facts to back it up or initiating an investigation to prove the same.”
