2 Oregon firms to pay fines for EPA violations

Two Oregon companies under contract with Sunoco MidAmerica's refinery have agreed to pay fines to settle outstanding violations of state air pollution laws, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said yesterday.

Treated Water Outsourcing will pay $60,000, and U.S. Filter/Scaltech, Inc., will pay $15,000. Both perform waste-treatment functions for the refinery. All three are located at 1819 Woodville Rd., the agency said.

Treated Water's violations centered on emissions of volatile organic compounds, including benzene. U.S. Filter/Scaltech failed to have a proper operating permit for an extended time, the Ohio EPA said.
