Perrysburg Township bungles flyer

2/26/2004

My tax bill would be how much?

That s what Perrysburg Township voters asked after receiving a flyer that contained incorrect information about two fire department levies on next week s ballot.

The township is asking for a 2-mill, five-year replacement levy, and a new 1-mill, five-year levy. If approved, the replacement levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $70 a year and raise $871,867 annually, township Administrator John Hrosko said.

The flyer, which was sent to every registered voter in the township, incorrectly said the replacement levy would cost $200 a year for the owner of a home valued at $100,000.

The new 1-mill levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $35 a year - not the $100 that the township s flyer incorrectly stated.

“There was just a misunderstanding on how levies are figured,” Mr. Hrosko said. “With the current property values based on 35 percent of a home s total valuation, if you have a 1-mill levy, it s going to cost you $35.”

If approved, the levy would generate $435,933 a year and allow the township to buy new equipment. The township wants to replace two equipment trucks that were donated to the fire department over 20 years ago with one heavy rescue truck, Mr. Hrosko said.

“The replacement levy is not a new tax,” he said. “The old 2-mill levy is done this year, and this is replacing that old levy.”
