Maumee-Perrysburg fireworks to be tested

3/4/2004

Officials will test fireworks starting at 7 tonight to help decide the ideal site for the annual Maumee-Perrysburg-joint fireworks display for the 4th of July holiday.

The testing, which will last about an hour, will take place in three spots. The fireworks will be launched from the Fort Meigs Memorial Bridge between Maumee and Perrysburg, from a site on the floodplain near the bridge, and from Orleans Park. The Fort Meigs Memorial Bridge will be closed during the fireworks testing.

After some errors during the grand finale of last year's show, officials decided to switch fireworks companies, Maumee Administrator John Jezak said. Colonial Fireworks of Clayton, Mich., will do the show this year instead of Zambelli Inter|nationale Fireworks Manufacturing Co., Inc., of New Castle, Pa.

“We're looking at different locations so we can use larger shells,” Mr. Jezak said. “We think this year's show will be bigger than ever.”
