Libraries to offer wireless access

A partnership between Buckeye CableSystem and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library now allows library patrons with their own laptop computers and wireless Internet access to connect with the library's Internet system.

The wireless signal at the main library and its 18 branches will extend some 300 feet from its origin in each library, said Tom Dawson, senior manager of government and community affairs for Buckeye CableSystem.

Clyde Scoles, director of the library, said: "This is a gift from Buckeye that will give the people who use the library the freedom to move around and access all we have to offer."

Allan Block, managing director of Block Communications, Inc., which owns 12 properties, including The Blade and Buckeye CableSystem, said the marriage between Buckeye and the library seemed obvious.

"There has been a rush to put hot spots in almost every conceivable place," Mr. Block said. "Somehow in this rush, some people have not thought about the most natural place - the library."

BCI is the parent company of Buckeye CableSystem and The Blade.

Buckeye Express subscribers will be able to use the wireless service for free, and those with library cards at a discounted rate, officials said.

Rates to use the wireless service start at $2.50 an hour.
