Stone company will pay $15K fine for violations

3/19/2004

Seaway Sand and Stone has agreed to pay $15,000 to settle a dispute with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency over wastewater discharge violations at the company's former quarry on Airport Highway in Lucas County's Swanton Township.

The violations were cited by state environmental officials in 2000 and 2001 following complaints raised by Swanton Township trustees and area residents. Unauthorized discharges of industrial wastewater were found in McNolton Ditch and Dreweyer Ditch, plus an unnamed ditch.

Settling ponds to treat the wastewater were constructed without permits.

The company removed the ponds last year, the Ohio EPA said.

Up to $5,000 of the fine can be waived if Seaway participates in an erosion-prevention project by laying stone on a muddy trail between the Klewer Towpath in Maumee and the Side Cut Metropark riverview parking lot, a metroparks spokesman said.
