East Sandusky Bay preserve adds 155 acres

4/2/2004

SANDUSKY - The Trust for Public Land and Erie MetroParks announced yesterday it had added 155 acres to the new East Sandusky Bay Preserve MetroPark along Lake Erie.

The land is part of 1,200 acres of freshwater marsh near Cedar Point that the park system plans to preserve. Erie MetroParks acquired 1,029 acres in November from the Trust for Public Land and the Nature Conservancy and bought a 14-acre parcel next to Plum Brook in January.

U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R., Ohio) and U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) secured $2.5 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program.

The land was acquired from the Joseph Steinen Wildlife Trust.

Because of restrictions on how the land can be used, activities in the park are expected to be limited to endeavors such as hiking, bird-watching, and limited waterfowl hunting.
