Whitehouse: Land sale approved; housing in the works

Whitehouse sold nearly 18 acres of its land last week to a developer who plans to put housing on the site.

Village council members approved selling the former well-field site along Heller Road to Charles Grass, of the Kountryside Land Development Company, for $280,000.

Councilman Herb Little, chairman of the council's franchise, lands, and buildings committee, said Mr. Grass is studying the 17.8-acre property to decide what kind of housing will work best.

He is considering several options, including single-family homes or a retirement community. The site is zoned for single-family homes on 1-acre lots.

The village has also received several bids for its former municipal building on Providence Street in the community's downtown business district. The highest bid was from Steve Saneholtz for $250,000.

Mr. Saneholtz has commissioned an environmental report on the property before

committing to the purchase. The study is scheduled to be completed by May 18. The former municipal building, which is about 6,000 square feet, dates back to 1944. The village abandoned the building in July after constructing a $2 million facility. Several subdivisions are in the works around Whitehouse, and a proposal for another housing development called Savanna Lake has been submitted to the village.
