Last inmates removed from Lima prison

LIMA - The last inmates have been moved out of the Lima Correctional Institution, which is being shut down to save $25 million a year.

A group of 29 inmates was moved Wednesday morning to the nearby Allen Correctional Institution.

The prison is slated to be closed by June 26. About 400 jobs will be eliminated. Workers have the option of filling jobs at other prisons around the state.

The prison had about 1,500 inmates when the closing was announced a year ago. It opened in 1982 and was a state hospital for the criminally insane before being turned into a prison.
