Toledo Zoo ranks in survey's top 10

5/7/2004

The Toledo Zoo was chosen by a national periodical, Child Magazine, as one of the top 10 zoos in the country.

The magazine ranked the Toledo Zoo eighth after reviewing surveys completed by the more than 150 zoos that belong to the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.

The surveys asked 64 questions that gauged everything from the quality and number of exhibits to security and safety measures, said Karen Cicero, Child Magazine senior editor.

The Toledo Zoo houses 4,723 animals on 74 acres.

Zoo officials filled out the surveys, which were then reviewed by experts, Ms. Cicero said. The process took about five months. Visits to the sites were not a part of the rating process, she added.

The article on zoos will be in the June/July issue that will hit newsstands May 18.
