Car accident kills Dundee teen, injures his brother

DUNDEE - A 15-year-old Dundee boy was killed and his 17-year-old brother was hurt yesterday when the older brother lost control of his car, which then flipped over and hit a tree, Monroe County sheriff's deputies said.

Daniel Haddix was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred about 7:50 a.m. along Dixon Road just east of Alford Road in Dundee Township, deputies said.

His brother, Duane Haddix II, was treated at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor.

Deputies said Duane was westbound on Dixon when he lost control of his car on a curve. He overcorrected, then rolled the vehicle as it entered the ditch on the left side of the road, striking a tree in the passenger-door area of the car.

Excessive speed appears to have been a factor, Deputy Brian Angerer said.

The two boys were on their way to classes at Dundee High School, where school officials brought in grief counselors and local clergy for students. The school announced the news to students about 10 a.m., Dundee Superintendent Bob Black said.

Daniel was a freshman at the school and a member of the football and track teams. He was recuperating from a stroke suffered during fall football practice.
