Officials get retail plan in Maumee

5/11/2004

The Maumee Planning Commission last night reviewed a site plan for the Shops at Fallen Timbers, an open-air retail development proposed for 130 acres near U.S. 24, just west of the I-475/U.S. 23 interchange.

The commission delayed voting on the plan until city administrators finish detailed responses to the designs. Commission members intend to discuss the plan at a May 24 meeting.

The site plan, submitted by General Growth Properties, Inc., of Chicago, calls for just over 1 million square feet of retail space. The development would include department stores, retail shops, restaurants, movie theaters, and a bookstore.

Many of the stores would be connected, but they would have varying designs to mimic the look of uptown Maumee, developers said. The shops would be linked by pedestrian walkways and would feature a central area with a fountain, children's playground, and formal gardens.

A traffic study commissioned by the developers recommended adding lanes to roads around the proposed development. The developers would pay for road-widening projects.
