Grants given for disposal of old tires

5/14/2004

COLUMBUS - Seven solid waste management districts in northwest Ohio, including Lucas County's, are among 44 statewide awarded grants to set up and run scrap tire collection programs.

The recycling and litter prevention division of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources awarded $430,637 in grants. The maximum grant for districts, some of which include two or more counties, was $10,000.

Districts may decide the types of tires accepted, how many each resident may drop off, and whether to charge. All tires must be destined for an end market, such as processing for another use.

A tire-dropoff event must be held between July 1 and June 30, 2005. Lucas County will hold its event in spring, 2005, and will not charge those dropping off passenger tires.

The Lucas County district received $10,000 and estimated it would collect 5,000 tires.
